I’ve just logged onto wordpress.com and unfortunately it looks like you can’t install custom plugins in wordpress.com. The only way I can think around this for you is to host your own wordpress blog on some rented space. You can download the source at wordpress.org.

Thanks, yes, I’ve seen the instructions. But that was precisely my question: how does one install plug-ins directly on a WP blog *hosted* by WP

Check out http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-rdfa/ there are instructions there. I'll double check for you blog as its a wordpress.com site and I'm a little unsure how plugins work on that site. Check back soon and I'll let you know.
